Caracol de Mar is Gabriela Camara's seafood restaurant in Condesa, the sister to Contramar. It began inside the Circulo Mexicano hotel in the Centro Historico and has since moved into a house on the corner of Campeche and Saltillo in Condesa, where a wooden spiral staircase climbs to an upstairs dining room with floor to ceiling windows and a vaulted ceiling. The restaurant calls what it does alta cocina de mar y campo, high cooking of sea and country.
The menu is deliberately unstable, rewritten around what the boats and the farms deliver, with contemporary Mexican technique and a light Peruvian accent. Expect ceviches and aguachiles that lean hot and citric, a tuna tostada dressed with furikake, fish al pastor tacos, and charcoal grilled octopus, with a chocolate tamal finished with coconut crumble and hoja santa ice cream for dessert.
The room is bright and unstuffy, closer to a seaside house than a fine dining room, and it fills with a Condesa crowd from lunch service onward. It holds a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide Mexico.
