El Califa de Leon · Restaurant · Mexico City
The world's first Michelin-starred taqueria
El Califa de Leon is a taqueria barely wider than a corridor on Avenida Ribera de San Cosme in San Rafael, and it has been grilling on the same corner for more than seventy years. In 2024 it became the first taqueria anywhere in the world to receive a Michelin star, which it held again in 2025. It did not retain the star in the 2026 Mexico guide, and it is still open and operating exactly as it always has.
The menu is four tacos. The gaonera is the one people queue for: thin sliced beef filet seared to order on the plancha, dressed with nothing but salt and a squeeze of lime. Alongside it are bistec, costilla and a pork chuleta. Tortillas are pressed to order, two salsas sit on the counter, and that is the whole proposition.
There is no dining room. A handful of people stand at the count
