More than twenty years of Polanco sushi and teppanyaki
El Japonez has spent more than twenty years turning Japanese food into a Mexico City going out ritual, and the Polanco branch on Emilio Castelar is the one most visitors end up in. It sits in a converted Polanco house, remodeled into a series of rooms and a terrace, and it fills every night of the week with a mixed crowd of neighborhood regulars and out of town tables.
The kitchen buys hard: export grade bluefin tuna, Ora King salmon from New Zealand and short grain Japanese rice. The menu runs from cold and hot starters through nigiri and sashimi to the long roll list that made the group's name, then into soups, salads, robatayaki skewers off the charcoal and a teppanyaki service where the cooking happens at your table. It is a fusion house, not a purist one, and the rolls are built for sharing.
The design is dark and theatrical, with low light, a busy bar and volume that rises toward the weekend, when the room runs to one in the morning. Group Sinestesia now operates seven locations across the city, but Polanco keeps the best terrace.
