A 17th-century hacienda dining room in Polanco
Hacienda de los Morales is a 16th-century estate that survived the city growing around it. The land was planted with mulberry trees, the morales of the name, to feed the silkworms newly brought to New Spain; construction of the main house began in 1647, and over the centuries it hosted Agustin de Iturbide and quartered Villista troops. It opened as a restaurant on 14 April 1967 and has anchored Polanco ever since.
The cooking is traditional Mexican with an international dining-room repertoire layered on top, the kind of menu built for celebration meals rather than experiment.
