Les Moustaches has been the grand French restaurant of Mexico City for more than five decades, occupying a Porfirian mansion on Rio Sena a block off Paseo de la Reforma. It is old-money dining in the literal sense: parquet, drapery, silver, and a room that has hosted diplomats and the city's business establishment since 1974.
The cooking is classical French with an eclectic streak, built on traditional method and not on reinvention. Plates regulars return for include the spinach salad finished tableside, a crisp pollo Kiev and the crujiente de durazno, backed by one of the deepest wine lists in the city.
Live piano and violin play through service, and the mansion's salons split into intimate corners and larger rooms, which is why the address works as both a business-lunch institution and a special-occasion table. Complimentary valet sits at the door with a private lot behind it, and Colonia Cuauhtemoc puts it walking distance from the Angel de la Independencia.
