Osteria del Becco opened on Goldsmith in Polanco in 2002, built as an Italian dining room that felt contemporary instead of trattoria nostalgic, and more than two decades later it is still one of the addresses Mexico City reaches for when the occasion is serious.
The cooking is classical and weighted to northern Italy: robiola ravioli finished with crushed toasted almonds, risotto with porcini and fresh truffle, tagliatelle with artichoke and guanciale, a veal milanesa layered with prosciutto and Asiago, and a rotating selection of raw fish. In truffle season the dining room turns into theater, with staff moving table to table shaving truffle over gnocchi and risotto to order.
The cellar is the real landmark. Becco holds one of the deepest collections of Italian labels anywhere in the Americas, tens of thousands of bottles running from post war Barolo to Tuscan reserves from the 1950s, and the sommelier team is used to being asked for something specific. The building offers a quiet, low lit main dining room downstairs and a rooftop terrace above, which is the better choice on a warm evening.
