Mexico City's oldest restaurant, reborn in Polanco
Prendes is the oldest restaurant name in Mexico City. Two Asturian brothers, Manuel and Rafael Prendes, opened it in 1892 on the plot where the Palacio de Bellas Artes now stands, then moved it to 16 de Septiembre in the Centro Historico when construction began. Over the following century it fed Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Maria Felix and Venustiano Carranza, and Rivera's habit of ordering gusanos de maguey there is part of the restaurant's own folklore; Prendes was the first restaurant in Mexico to serve the dish. It reopened on 1 September 2016 in a new home at Palacio de Hierro Moliere in Polanco.
The cooking has always been Mexican and Spanish at once, and executive chef Roman Aguilar Alvarez has kept the historic dishes on the menu instead of reinventing them. Filete Chemita and escamoles a la hidalguense remain from the original repertoire, served the way regulars expect, alongside a wine list that leans Spanish and service that stays formal in the old style.
The Polanco dining room is a modern reading of the original: dark wood, white cloths, generous spacing and enough quiet for a business lunch. It belongs to the same family of restaurants as Bellinghausen, with siblings at Puerto Prendes in Roma Norte and Boccado Prendes in Santa Fe.
