Edo Kobayashi's Japanese counter in Cuauhtemoc
Rokai is a Japanese izakaya on Rio Ebro in Colonia Cuauhtemoc, part of chef Edo Kobayashi's group of Mexico City restaurants and bars, which also includes Le Tachinomi Desu.
The format is part izakaya, part omakase counter. Sit at a table and order nigiri, sashimi, temaki, maki, grilled and fried plates and a ramen selection a la carte. Sit at the counter and hand the decision to the chef, who works through the day's fish in sequence with the rice, cures and cuts adjusted piece by piece. The drinks list is deep on sake, shochu and Japanese whisky, with cocktails built around them.
The space is small, plain and deliberately undesigned: a short counter, a handful of tables, no theatrics. Nothing about the room announces itself from the street, which is part of the character. It is quiet at lunch and tight in the evening, and the counter is where the restaurant is at its best.
Ask for counter seats explicitly if you want the omakase, since only a few exist per service.
