Edo Kobayashi's Japanese counter in Cuauhtemoc
Rokai is the Japanese reference point in Colonia Cuauhtemoc and one of the founding rooms of the Edo Kobayashi Group, the outfit behind Le Tachinomi Desu, Kura and Cabrera 7. It has been running on Rio Ebro long enough to have trained much of the city's Japanese cooking talent, and it remains the address locals name first when the subject is sushi in Mexico City.
The format is part izakaya, part omakase counter. Sit at a table and you order nigiri, sashimi, temaki, maki, grilled and fried plates and udon a la carte. Sit at the counter and you hand the decision to the chef, who works through the day's fish in sequence with the rice, cures and cuts adjusted piece by piece. The drinks list is deep on sake, shochu and Japanese whisky, with cocktails built around them.
