Japan's first restaurant abroad, open since 1970
Suntory opened on Torres Adalid in Del Valle in September 1970, and the detail worth knowing is that it was the Japanese group's first restaurant anywhere, in Japan or outside it. More than half a century later the house is still run as an embassy for Japanese cooking rather than a trend, which is why it has become shorthand in Mexico City for old-money dinners that never go out of style.
The property is a small compound rather than a single dining room. Teppanyaki counters cook in front of you, a sushi bar works separately, shabu shabu comes to the table, private Japanese-style rooms sit behind sliding doors, and a garden runs through the middle of it all. A bar with live piano handles the aperitif, and the whole sequence is delivered with a formality that has not been diluted.
The cooking keeps to tradition while making quiet concessions to the Mexican palate the house has spent fifty years teaching. Regulars arrive with three generations at the table and order the same things their parents did. The group now runs rooms in Lomas, Interlomas, Pedregal, Acapulco, Guadalajara and Puebla, but Del Valle is the original.
