Charcoal and mezcal in a Juarez townhouse
Taverna occupies an early twentieth century house on General Prim in Colonia Juarez, and it is built to feel like the southern European taverns it is named after. The layout runs from small interior dining rooms out to a central patio and back to a bar that keeps the energy up through the night with cocktails, wine, mezcal and music.
Chefs Emme Prieto and Chris Domit cook over fire and charcoal, and the menu is written for the centre of the table. Starters cover pan con tomate, hummus, chorizo stuffed dates, lamb skewers with caper sauce, crispy mussels with black garlic mayonnaise and XO, and a beef tartare with smoked oyster and tapioca chicharron. Vegetable courses are treated seriously, from heirloom tomato with Veracruz burrata and guanciale to smoked seasonal vegetables with parmesa
