Two blocks from the Zocalo, the roof of Downtown Mexico sits above a field of colonial parapets and church domes, with the Torre Latinoamericana rising behind them. It is reached by lift from a courtyard most people on Isabel la Catolica walk past without looking up, in a hotel that sits within a short stroll of the city's biggest museums and restaurants.
The building is the 17th-century Palace of the Counts of Miravalle, spread across the top floors of the old palace, and the Cherem-Serrano refit kept the bones honest: raw colonial stone and exposed beams set against new industrial-style construction. A concrete pool and a jacuzzi sit on the roof, surrounded by loungers, low sofas and planted corners, with a mural by Manuel Rodriguez Lozano nearby and a bar at each end of the deck.
Drinks run to tropical cocktails, highballs, cold beer and micheladas, with Mexican bar snacks and tacos to go with them.
Afternoons are quiet and sunlit, and the room turns properly social from sundown on Thursday through Saturday. It is one of the few rooftop pools in the historic center open to more than hotel guests.
