Nikkei restaurant, cabaret and club in the former Papagayo space in Saint-Tropez
Gaio took over the old Papagayo space in 2017, a Saint-Tropez nightlife address that dates back to 1962, and turned it into a restaurant, cabaret and club under one roof at 4 Rue du 11 Novembre 1918. It opened with outsized works by the neo-expressionist artist Domingo Zapata on its walls and an Art Deco look set off by large velvet sofas. Doors open every night at 9pm and the party runs until 5am.
The kitchen is Nikkei, the meeting of Japanese and Peruvian cooking. Starters run from a classic John Dory ceviche with leche de tigre and a bluefin tuna tiradito to wagyu nigiri and the Gaio roll of bluefin tuna, fried shrimp and flamed foie gras. Anticucho grills of chicken, fish and octopus follow, along with beef tenderloin, picanha and a 1.5 kg tomahawk to share.
Dinner comes with a show. Cabaret performers set the tone while the tables are still full, and later in the night the room turns into a club, with a long roster of guest DJs taking the booth over the season.
