Astoux et Brun is a seafood brasserie on the corner of Rue Felix Faure and Rue Louis Blanc in Cannes, facing the Vieux Port. It has specialized in seafood since 1953, when the Brun family took over the corner business from the Astoux family, and the Brun family still runs it three generations later.
The idea that made the place came from Maurice Brun. Watching customers buy baskets of oysters to take home, he began offering them on the spot with a glass of white wine. The first brasserie was a modest street terrace, a few tables and big refrigerated display cases, with no chef at all, and it quickly became where Cannes locals met on weekends after the market. In 2012 the third generation, Sandrine and Stephanie Brun, opened the family seafood shop just across the street.
Oysters come from named growers and regions, among them Boutrais from Ireland, Gillardeau from Marennes and Isigny from Normandy. The platters run from Le Degustation for one or two up to Le Royal for two or three, with crab, 18 oysters, clams, whelks and prawns. The kitchen adds a house rock-fish soup, bouchot mussels mariniere, sole meuniere, lobster roasted or cold with mayonnaise, and tarte Tatin with salted caramel ice cream.
Seafood is served non-stop every day from noon. Dishes from the main menu run from noon to 2 p.m. and 7 to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays, and straight through on weekends. Tables are first come, first served, and last orders are at 9:30 p.m.
