Astoux et Brun is the seafood institution of Cannes, on the corner of Rue Felix Faure and Rue Louis Blanc, a few steps from the Vieux Port and the Marche Forville. Three generations in, it is still the address locals and visitors alike name first for oysters and a proper plateau de fruits de mer. It started in 1953 as a simple shellfish stall that Maurice Astoux worked on this corner.
The Brun family joined and added the idea that made the name: tasting oysters and shellfish on the spot, standing up, with a glass of cold white. In 1988 the son, Jacky, bought the neighboring premises and installed a full kitchen, and the stall became the brasserie it is today. The flagship is the plateau de fruits de mer, a tiered tower of oysters, langoustines, gambas, tourteau crab and whelks on crushed ice.
Oysters run year-round, Gillardeau and Boutrais among the varieties, and the kitchen turns out moules mariniere, a serious soupe de poisson and a classic sole meuniere. The room is all bentwood chairs, mosaic tiling and black-and-white family photographs, with a live lobster tank inside and the ecailler, the oyster-shucker, working the street-corner display in his green Coquillages Brun apron.
That corner ecailler is the whole character of the place: shucking to order, feeding the terrace, exactly as it has since 1953. It is open every day, year-round, with non-stop service, and it is genuinely casual, buzzing and family-friendly rather than a dressed-up occasion. It runs a walk-in number system, so on a busy Cannes evening you give your party size and wait for a table to free up.
