La Villa Archange is the great gastronomic table above Cannes, chef Bruno Oger's two-Michelin-star restaurant set in a restored 18th-century Provencal bastide in Le Cannet, ten minutes up into the hills from the Croisette. In the current guide it holds two stars, and it is a Relais et Chateaux member and one of Les Grandes Tables du Monde. This is the dinner you drive for.
Oger is a Breton, trained under Georges Blanc, who earned his first stars in Cannes, settled on this Le Cannet bastide in 2009, and won two Michelin stars about ten months after it opened. His seasonal menu travels from Brittany to the Mediterranean: Ile de Groix abalone with persillade, roasted langoustines with burnt fennel and a vadouvan sauce, Breton lobster with a claw ravioli of Guemene andouille and a tarragon jus, and Alpilles lamb braised with herbs, confit tomatoes and gnocchi. Desserts are by pastry chef Yohan Jara, and the wine list runs past 400 labels.
The setting is the point of difference: a bastide on a tree-lined plot, with garden lounge seating, a shaded terrace and a leafy inner courtyard for warm evenings, and an intimate dining room of parquet floors, pale upholstered chairs, baroque touches and old photographs. On the same estate, Oger also runs the casual Bistrot des Anges, a Bib Gourmand, so the property spans a two-star dinner and an easy lunch.
Dinner is served Tuesday through Saturday from 7:30 p.m., with lunch on Friday and Saturday from noon. It is closed Sunday and Monday.
