Bambuddha · Restaurant · Ibiza
The island's original MediterrAsian temple, Spice Route dining in a bamboo garden since 1999.
Bambuddha hides behind tall bamboo on the San Juan road above Santa Eulalia, a garden of Balinese pavilions, chandeliers and stone Hindu deities built around a temple-like main room. John Moon opened it in 1999, and after years listed as Bambuddha Grove it now goes simply by Bambuddha.
The kitchen follows the old Spice Route, a MediterrAsian journey from Spain through Thailand to Japan. Plates arrive to share: dim sum, bao, sushi and sashimi, ceviche and carpaccio, curries and grilled skewers, meant to cover the table and keep moving.
Signatures run to Kowloon-style king crab in spicy tobanjan, miso black cod, Peking duck pancakes, beef gyoza and yellowtail with yuzu. It is fusion cooking built for theater rather than restraint.
The mood tips from dinner toward a party as the night goes on, with music, candlelight and a knowing, mischievous streak. Bambuddha runs seasonally, opening in spring and carrying through the summer. Come late and settle in for the long haul.
