Rafa Zafra's caviar-and-seafood cove on Cala Jondal sand
Casa Jondal sits directly on the sand at Cala Jondal, a pebble-and-sand cove on Ibiza's quieter southern coast. It is the summer project of Rafa Zafra, the Andalusian chef who came up through elBulli before building the Estimar seafood restaurants in Barcelona and Madrid.
The cooking is seafood at its most luxurious and least fussy: Denia red prawns off the grill, oysters, raw and salt-cured fish, and a free hand with caviar, including the caviar bikini that has become the restaurant's calling card. Wagyu and a serious champagne list round out the table.
Fish and shellfish arrive daily, much of it through the same Roses fishermen's guild that once supplied elBulli. Prices are high, and the crowd mixes yacht guests with regulars who book weeks ahead.
This is a warm-season, feet-in-the-sand address rather than a formal dining room, open through the Ibiza summer. It appears in the Michelin Guide, listed simply as Jondal.
