Family-run seafood on the water at Cala Es Xarco in Porroig, known for wild island fish and red prawns
Es Xarcu sits right at the water on Cala Es Xarco, a small fishermen's cove of sand, rock and boathouses in Porroig, on the south side of Sant Josep between Porroig and Cala Jondal. The last stretch of the drive is a dirt track, and boats can anchor directly in front of the restaurant.
It has been a family house for more than forty years. Mariano Torres and Caridad Cabanero laid the foundations, and today Carolina Torres runs it on the same lines: direct Ibizan cooking, fresh island fish, red prawns and shellfish, and a terrace looking out over the Mediterranean.
Wild fish of the day, including rotja, dentex, grouper, John Dory, pargo and sea bass, is priced by the kilo and baked in the oven, with sea bass also done in a salt crust. Red prawns come grilled or in garlic, and there are oysters, clams, mussels, lobster and Iberian ham, plus raors when they are in season. Homemade desserts include greixonera ibicenca and crema catalana.
The restaurant is open every day from 1pm to 10:30pm, with the kitchen taking orders until 10pm, so the cove works for a long lunch or for dinner.
