Family-run garden restaurant in San Lorenzo, with a Middle Eastern cafe by day and Italian dinners by night
La Paloma opened in 2004 in a run-down finca in San Lorenzo, a small village in the middle of the island with a church, a school and one local bar. The family painted it light blue and white, a friend painted flowers and birds on the walls, and it sits among orchards of oranges, tangerines and lemons that fill with blossom in spring.
It works as two restaurants in one. By day the cafe in the orange grove serves chef Nir Cohen's Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking: big salads, homemade focaccia, the signature falafel and several styles of hummus, sourdough pizzas and the Paloma Burger, with fresh juices and smoothies. Children have a playground, and on cold days the indoor rooms light the fire.
At night chef Prasuna Coppini, who learned Italian cooking from her mother in Tuscany, runs a small menu that changes weekly: two pastas, a risotto, two meat dishes including the grass-fed beef fillet with balsamic vinegar and thyme that is always on, one fresh fish, and vegan and vegetarian choices. Parmesan and Pantelleria capers come from Italy, and vegetables are local and organic when possible.
On summer evenings candles and fairy lights run through the orchard trees, and dinner starts with cocktails at the outdoor bar. The wine list leans toward organic, biodynamic and natural wines, with Spanish and Italian classics alongside.
