Yamashiro Hollywood · Los Angeles
Some restaurants borrow atmosphere. Yamashiro built an actual mountain palace in 1914 and has been serving dinner 250 feet above the city ever since. The Bernheimer brothers commissioned hundreds of craftsmen from Japan to recreate a palace from the Kyoto mountains - right here in the Hollywood Hills - to house their Asian art collection. The building became a restaurant. The views became the most uncompromising in Los Angeles.
When you walk in, the panorama opens up: the Hollywood Sign, the Griffith Observatory, and the downtown skyline spread across the glass in one continuous sweep. We find a table on the outdoor courtyard if you want the full effect - lantern-lit, surrounded by lush garden paths, with koi moving through ponds below. The fish have been here for over 60 years.
