Yamashiro is a mountain palace completed in 1914, serving dinner 250 feet above Hollywood Boulevard in the Hollywood Hills. The Bernheimer brothers began building it in 1911 to house their collection of Asian art, bringing in hundreds of craftsmen to recreate a palace from the Yamashiro province mountains near Kyoto. The 600-year-old pagoda on the grounds was flown in from Japan, and the restaurant describes it as the oldest structure in California.
Walk in and the city opens up: glass windows added to the front of the building frame the Los Angeles skyline, and around sunset the lights come on below. Before or after dinner, walk the open-air garden courtyard, where koi, some of them more than 60 years old, move through the pond.
The kitchen is Japanese-inspired, with sushi, seafood and A5 Wagyu across the menu. Start with the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice, finished with avocado puree, sweet soy, spicy mayo and pickled serrano, or the Grilled Octopus with confit fennel and sweet potato. The Chilean Sea Bass is miso marinated and served with shimeji mushrooms and a white miso beurre blanc.
For a group or an occasion, the A5 Wagyu Hot Pot brings sliced wagyu, a tsukune meatball and udon in a lemongrass broth, the Steak Garlic Noodles pair tenderloin with chili crisp and garlic butter, and the sushi boats run from a small boat for two to a sushi yacht for six to eight. Sunday brunch is served from 11am to 2:30pm.
