Le Cafe has stood on the Place des Lices since 1789, which makes it one of Saint-Tropez's most storied addresses. Its plane-tree terrace looks out over the petanque players, and on market days the stalls of local producers fill the square in front of it. From lunch through the aperitif hour, the shaded tables draw a long, unhurried crowd.
Inside, the decor is Provencal and modern at once: light colors, moire fabrics with floral prints, patinas and wood. As night falls, Le Cafe turns into a piano bar. Live musicians and singers work through French variety, Piaf, Aznavour and Gilbert Becaud's Nathalie, and the evening runs on in a bohemian, celebratory mood suited to a romantic dinner or a larger gathering.
The kitchen keeps to a Provencal brasserie style with Mediterranean touches, driven by the seasons. Sole meuniere with lemon confit, baked mussels, a black truffle and foie gras macaroni gratin and the Des Lices beef tartare anchor the menu, and desserts run to the Grand-Mere creme caramel and a chocolate souffle tart. At lunch a dish of the day changes through the week, from aioli on Friday to roast beef on Sunday.
Lunch is served from noon to 2:30pm and dinner from 7pm until 3am, every day of the week.
