AVANT earned a Michelin star in 2025, within eight months of opening
AVANT earned a Michelin star in 2025, within eight months of opening, and has held it into the 2026 Guide, for its precisely composed contemporary tasting menu. It sits on the 30th floor of the Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok in the Ploenchit district, an intimate counter of roughly ten seats wrapped around an open kitchen where every plate is finished in front of you.
The room is stripped-back and focused, putting the cooking and the chef front and center. Singaporean chef Haikal Johari leads from the pass; trained at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon in Tokyo and the three-star Amador in Germany, and formerly of the Michelin-starred Alma by Juan Amador in Singapore, he stands through the entire service explaining each dish, remarkable given the 2015 accident that left him paraplegic.
The menu is a contemporary blend of French technique and Japanese produce, changing with the seasons. The kitchen builds its progression around exceptional single ingredients, letting precision carry the meal.
With only about ten seats, this is one of the more coveted counters in the city. Dinner runs Monday through Saturday, and Friday and Saturday add a lunch seating as well; Sunday is closed. Reserve well ahead and settle in for a long, quiet, chef-led evening.
