Blue Elephant has carried royal Thai cuisine around the world since 1980
Blue Elephant has carried royal Thai cuisine around the world since 1980, and its Bangkok flagship is the grandest expression of the brand. It occupies a restored 1903 colonial mansion, the Thai Chine Building, beside Surasak BTS station in Sathorn - a heritage landmark listed by Thailand's Fine Arts Department that once housed the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
The dining room lives up to the setting: soaring ceilings, tall arched windows and finely worked timber, a stage built for palace-style dining. Master Chef Nooror Somany Steppe leads the kitchen, and has spent decades carrying refined, traditional Thai cooking onto the international stage.
The menu draws on Chef Nooror's treasured family recipes, plating classic royal Thai dishes - delicate curries, carved fruit and vegetables, time-honored technique - with the polish of genuine fine dining. The same mansion houses one of Thailand's most renowned cooking schools, where guests can learn those techniques hands-on.
For a first-time visitor after palace-style Thai in a truly historic room, few addresses in Bangkok deliver it so completely. It suits a special dinner or a milestone; dress smartly and reserve ahead, and consider a daytime class if the cooking school appeals.
