Chef Pom Pirapak's regional and royal Thai set menu in a restored riverside house across from Mandarin Oriental
Baan Phraya is the Thai fine-dining restaurant of Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, set in a restored century-old house on the far bank of the Chao Phraya, across the river from the hotel. The house was once home to Phraya Mahai Savan and Khunying Luean Mahai Savan and a gathering place for Thai nobility, and it has a past as Thailand's first Thai cooking school. Its original teakwood and intricate fretwork remain.
The kitchen is led by chef Phatchara "Pom" Pirapak, who grew up in Yasothon in northeastern Thailand cooking alongside her grandmother. Her menu revives regional and royal Thai recipes with a contemporary touch, using traditional techniques and careful sourcing. Dinner is an eight-course Thai set menu with optional wine or non-alcoholic pairings, and the charcoal-grilled Surat Thani river prawn is one of its signatures.
Many of the Thai herbs in the cooking and in the signature drinks come from an organic herb garden steps from the kitchen, harvested fresh each day. The outdoor terrace opens from 5pm to 6pm, and dinner is served in the dining room from 6pm to 11pm, Friday through Tuesday.
Guests arrive on the hotel's shuttle boat across the river or by car along Charoen Nakhon Road, where there is dedicated parking. Women are asked to wear elegant attire and proper footwear; men need long trousers and closed shoes, and sleeveless shirts are not permitted for men.
