Chef Danny Grant's wood-fired steakhouse on Maple Street in the Gold Coast
Maple & Ash is the Gold Coast steakhouse that runs dinner like a party. It is recommended in the Michelin Guide, which is not a star, but the cooking earns the attention: chef Danny Grant sends nearly everything through a wood-fired hearth and lets the smoke do the talking.
The restaurant spreads across more than one level, with an upstairs bar and lounge that stays open late for Nightcap on Thursdays from 9pm, and the energy climbs as the night goes on. The wine program holds a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, so it plays as much as a night out as a meal, and the house asks guests to dress elegant and chic.
The 28-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye comes off the wood fire carrying the smoke you came for, and the fire-roasted seafood tower, finished with garlic butter and chili oil, is the table centerpiece. Early in the evening, Tower Hour brings a fire-roasted tower of clams, scallops, prawns and king crab to the bar and lounge. Round out the spread with white cheddar mac and cheese and the ricotta agnolotti with winter truffle, or hand the ordering to the kitchen with the chef-selected IDGAF tasting menu.
Dinner is served nightly, Sunday through Thursday from 5 to 10:30 and Friday and Saturday from 4:30 to 11, with Sunday brunch from 10:30 to 2 for a slower, daylight version of the room. It is the dinner that already feels like the night out, and an easy launch point into the surrounding Gold Coast bars.
