Steak 48 is a high-energy River North steakhouse that opened in 2017, built around USDA Prime steaks, Wagyu, fresh seafood and shellfish, with a full list of wine and handcrafted cocktails.
What sets it apart is the kitchen on display. A glass-enclosed show kitchen lets guests watch the chefs at work, and the Prime steaks are wet-aged 28 days and hand cut in house by the master butcher.
The restaurant is a collection of dining rooms, from intimate to more energized, with a second-floor outdoor patio for summer nights and private dining suites for groups of 4 to 100. Open with the crispy shrimp in sweet Thai chili and garlic aioli, then build around a steak and the double baked truffle potato, finished with black truffle, fontina, gouda and boursin, a side big enough to share. The corn creme brulee, sweet corn with cream and turbinado sugar, is the sweet-savory side worth adding, and the 22 oz 45-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye is there for a bigger cut. Desserts run to a warm vanilla caramel cake and a triple layer key lime pie.
Steak 48 serves dinner nightly, Monday through Thursday 5 to 9, Friday and Saturday 4 to 10, and Sunday 4 to 9, so weekend nights run latest. Guests are encouraged to dress up, with collared shirts and sport coats appreciated and athletic wear not permitted. It sits steps from River North's bars, lounges and clubs, a dinner built for a longer night out.
