Michelin Star Restaurants Chicago (2026): The 22 We Recommend
Chicago Dining Guide
Why we wrote this guide
Chicago has turned into one of the most serious Michelin cities in America, and the 2025 Guide reshuffled the top of the list in ways that surprised even locals. The headline was the shakeup: Alinea, the modernist landmark that held three stars for well over a decade, dropped to two. That left Smyth standing alone as the city's only three-star restaurant. Kasama, the husband-and-wife Filipino room in Ukrainian Village, rose from one star to two, becoming the rare tasting-menu house to make that leap while still running a casual bakery counter by day.
So the shape of Chicago fine dining in 2026 looks like this: one restaurant at three stars, a tight cluster of four at two, a run of excellent one-star rooms, and a deep bench of Bib Gourmand and Guide-recommended spots that deliver serious cooking without the tasting-menu commitment. The food is not the hard part in Chicago. The hard part is access. The best tables sell out months ahead, many are fully prepaid and ticketed, and the calendars release on rolling windows that reward planning. This guide lays out every Michelin-recognized restaurant on our Chicago roster by exact tier, with a signature dish and a direct link for each, plus how to actually land a table. Last updated September 2026.
Three Michelin Stars

Smyth is Chicago's only three-Michelin-star restaurant, a loft-style West Loop room where John and Karen Urie Shields build a farm-driven North American tasting menu around peak-season ingredients from farmers, fishermen and makers. See Smyth.
Two Michelin Stars

Alinea is Grant Achatz's avant-garde tasting-menu temple in Lincoln Park, known for its innovative modernist cuisine, and now holds two Michelin stars after dropping from three in the 2025 Guide. See Alinea.
Oriole is Noah Sandoval's intimate West Loop room, reached through a converted freight elevator, where the constantly evolving two-star tasting menu blends French and Japanese influences. See Oriole.
Ever is Curtis Duffy's serene Fulton Market tasting-menu house, holding two stars for an eight- to ten-course seasonal land-and-sea menu. See Ever.
Kasama is the world's first Michelin-starred Filipino restaurant, a Ukrainian Village bakery by day and a two-star dinner room by night serving a modern Filipino tasting menu after its elevation from one star. See Kasama.
One Michelin Star

Topolobampo is Rick Bayless's refined River North Mexican room, known for a tasting menu that changes every six to eight weeks and never repeats a dish. See Topolobampo.
Elske is David and Anna Posey's modern American West Loop room with Danish touches, built around an open wood-fired hearth, a one-star kitchen turning out plates like crispy Danish polser with pickles and remoulade. See Elske.
Moody Tongue is a Michelin-starred tasting menu inside a working craft brewery in the South Loop, pairing courses like pork belly with caviar against house-brewed beer. See Moody Tongue.
Boka is a Lincoln Park room led by chef and partner Lee Wolen, a one-star kitchen known for its polished, seasonally driven contemporary American cooking. See Boka.
Michelin Bib Gourmand

Monteverde is Sarah Grueneberg's handmade-pasta trattoria in the West Loop, a Michelin Guide pick built around its open Pastificio pasta station and dishes like Cacio Whey Pepe. See Monteverde.
Frontera Grill is Rick Bayless's River North regional Mexican cantina, a Bib Gourmand institution since 1987 known for its Oaxacan black mole. See Frontera Grill.
avec is Paul Kahan's intimate wood-clad Mediterranean wine bar in the West Loop, a Michelin Guide pick that sparked Chicago's small-plates craze with dishes like its chorizo-stuffed bacon-wrapped Medjool dates. See avec.
Girl and the Goat is Stephanie Izard's West Loop small-plates powerhouse, a Bib Gourmand and one of the toughest reservations in the city. See Girl and the Goat.
Michelin Guide Selected
Momotaro is a Guide-recommended modern Japanese room in Fulton Market, running a robata grill and sushi program over a late-night izakaya, known for dishes like its beef tsukune bao sliders. See Momotaro.
How to book a Michelin table in Chicago
The tasting-menu rooms at the top of the list run on prepaid tickets, not standard reservations. Oriole and Smyth release seats through Tock as fully prepaid, ticketed experiences, and Alinea takes non-refundable bookings through OpenTable; all three post menus months in advance and sell out within minutes of the calendar opening. Set a reminder for the release window, have your date and party size ready, and treat it like buying concert tickets.
Most of the rest, from the one-star rooms to the Bib Gourmand and Guide-recommended spots, take standard reservations through OpenTable, released on rolling windows that vary by restaurant. Book the moment the window opens for the two- and one-star houses; the Bib and Guide picks are easier but still worth planning around on weekends.
Each restaurant's page carries the right platform for it, plus the release window and the timing that actually gets you in. Outside Las Vegas the restaurant's own platform holds the reservation rather than us, but the page tells you exactly where to be and when.
