Forte dei Marmi is a refined Italian room at the quiet southern tip of South Beach, set in a restored 1938 Mediterranean-revival building at 150 Ocean Drive. It is Italian fine dining with a coastal, dressed-up feel, serving dinner nightly and lunch on Saturdays and Sundays.
The concept takes its name from Forte dei Marmi, the seaside resort in northern Tuscany, and translates that slow-food, sea-facing sensibility to Ocean Drive. Chef Fabrizio Piga's kitchen works with local organic produce, farm-raised prime meats, and wild-caught seafood and fish. Architect Chad Oppenheim reworked the building, and his interiors with Milan designer Henry Timi give a calm, material-driven space, framed by gardens from landscape designer Enzo Enea.
The standouts start with the truffle cacio e pepe, bucatini served in a pecorino wheel, alongside the truffle beef tartare, the Mediterranean branzino filet, and whole Mediterranean fish prepared al sale, grilled, or acqua pazza style. For dessert, the honey onyx pistachio gelato is made to share. The crowd is international and put-together, and there is a dress code: no shorts, sandals, or hats for men. It is a buzzy but grown-up room, better for a considered dinner than a quick bite.
