Makoto is the modern Japanese restaurant of chef Makoto Okuwa, set on Level 3 of Bal Harbour Shops just north of Miami Beach. A master of Edomae-style sushi, Okuwa reshapes that tradition for a Miami crowd, and the result is the rare luxury-mall restaurant that feels like a genuine destination.
The kitchen covers three things: pristine raw fish from the sushi bar, soulful skewers over a charcoal robata grill, and premium Japanese and Australian wagyu, with a sashimi omakase for anyone who wants the chef to steer. Paris-based architect and designer India Mahdavi created the current room, with a coral pink, saffron, and sandalwood palette and supersize floral motifs inside, and 1930s-style chairs and palm trees out on the terrace.
Anchor an order with the whole branzino with wasabi chimichurri and shiso, A5 wagyu strip from Miyazaki alongside the Australian wagyu filet, chicken skewers off the robata, and caviar for the table. The sushi list runs deep, from chu-toro and king crab nigiri to futomaki and hand rolls.
Lunch is served daily from 11:30am to 4pm and dinner from 4pm to 11pm, indoors or out on the terrace. Groups can book a semi-private setting inside, and the terrace can be reserved for a seated private event.
