Iron Chef robata and sushi at Bal Harbour Shops
Makoto is the modern-Japanese room of Iron Chef Makoto Okuwa, set inside Bal Harbour Shops just north of Miami Beach. Trained in Edomae sushi, Okuwa reshapes that tradition for a Miami crowd, and the result is the rare luxury-mall restaurant that reads as a genuine destination.
The kitchen works in three registers: pristine raw fish at the sushi counter, soulful skewers over a charcoal robata grill, and premium beef, with an omakase for anyone who wants the chef to steer. Paris-based architect India Mahdavi redesigned the space with bright walls, floral wallpaper, spherical hanging lights, cozy banquettes, an expanded outdoor terrace, and more seats at the sushi bar.
