Le Coucou is chef Daniel Rose's unapologetically French restaurant inside the 11 Howard hotel in SoHo, at 138 Lafayette Street. It won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in 2017 and holds one Michelin star in the current guide, and it suits an occasion: an anniversary, a client dinner, a night that should feel like an event.
Roman and Williams designed the space, pairing classic European atmosphere with modern touches, and the open kitchen is part of the view. The room is equal parts classic and cool, and the crowd makes for good people watching.
The kitchen is classic French with personality. The signatures to know are the Quenelle de brochet, a pike mousse in lobster sauce americaine, and Tout le lapin, all of the rabbit. The Tartare de boeuf is hand-chopped prime filet with traditional condiments and caviar, and the gourmandises also run to veal sweetbreads with cream and tarragon and grilled foie gras. Desserts include ile flottante with candied almonds and a chocolate tart with vanilla ice cream, and the wine list stays mostly in France.
Lunch is served daily from 11:30 AM, until 2:30 PM Saturday through Thursday and 2:00 PM on Friday. Dinner starts at 5:00 PM, closing at 10:00 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 PM Friday and Saturday.
