Balthazar opened in SoHo in the spring of 1997, a lively, romantic French brasserie at 80 Spring Street that serves traditional French fare from breakfast through supper every day, with brunch on weekends. It is an address that works for a weekday breakfast, a long weekend brunch, an afternoon plateau of shellfish, or dinner that runs toward midnight.
The raw bar is a big part of the draw, with East and West Coast oysters, littleneck clams, shrimp cocktail, half lobster, and crab, or the two grand seafood platters, Le Grand and Le Balthazar. The bread and pastries that come to the table are baked fresh every day at Balthazar Bakery.
The dinner menu, under executive chef Jean-Christophe Guiony, runs the brasserie canon with conviction: steak frites with maitre d' butter, NY strip steak au poivre, onion soup gratinee, escargots in garlic butter, and moules frites. Duck a l'orange, beef short rib with creamy polenta, and grilled Sullivan County trout round out the entrees, and weekday breakfast and weekend brunch each have their own menus.
Balthazar is open seven days a week without a break in service: breakfast Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM, brunch Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, lunch on weekdays, and dinner every night from 5:00 PM to midnight. Private events for more than 200 guests should be planned at least 30 days ahead.
