Beauty & Essex hides behind a working pawn shop on the Lower East Side, and the dining room only reveals itself once guests walk through the shop. It is a room built to make dinner feel like the first act of the night, with shareable plates for a table that wants to graze.
The entrance is the trick everyone talks about: a pawn shop stocked with vintage jewelry, custom musical instruments, one-of-a-kind art, and other treasures curated by GoldGirl, Lauren Kaminsky, nearly all of it for sale. Past the shop, a grand circular staircase wraps around a two-story custom chandelier. The bi-level space holds four distinct dining rooms, one of them private, plus two bars and a lounge. The women's bathroom doubles as a salon, with a luxurious sofa and antique perfume bottles.
Chef Chris Santos was one of the pioneers of the small, shareable plate. Anchor around the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Dumplings, then add tuna poke wonton tacos, the Rhode Island lobster roll, and grilled Spanish octopus. The raw bar runs from oysters to Oscietra caviar service, and a 24 oz. dry-aged ribeye or classic beef Wellington adds heft. Tables of three or more can order Beauty & The Feast, a family-style prix fixe at $78 per person for the whole table.
Dinner runs Tuesday and Wednesday 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Thursday 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM, Friday and Saturday 5:00 PM to midnight, and Sunday 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, closed Monday. Online reservations cover parties of up to 14 guests.
