Don Angie is the West Village's cult Italian-American, a room on Greenwich Avenue that married chefs Angie Rito and Scott Tacinelli opened in 2017. Rito came up through her family's bakery in Cleveland and then Torrisi; Tacinelli through Quality Italian. The cooking carries that pedigree without any of the stiffness.
The dining room is small and deliberately so, with blue-gray leather banquettes, bentwood chairs, a dark checkerboard floor, potted greenery, moody lighting, and a compact brass-accented bar. Beside the restaurant, Don's Next Door is a private dining room with its own entrance for seated dinners of up to 18.
The headliner is the Lasagna for Two, layered with Italian sausage bolognese and whipped robiolina. Around it, the menu is Italian-American cooking with a creative streak: Chrysanthemum Salad with garlic, sesame and parmesan; a Stuffed Garlic Flatbread for the table; Garganelli Giganti with broken-meatball ragu, guanciale and pecorino; Buffalo Milk Caramelle with black sesame and candied kumquat; and Sorpresine with smoked mussels. The wine list is short and smart, and the floor is worth asking for a pour.
The bar opens Monday to Thursday at 4:30 PM and the dining room at 5:00 PM; Friday to Sunday the bar opens at 3:30 PM and the dining room at 4:00 PM, with lunch Friday to Sunday from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Last seating is 10:30 PM nightly. Don Angie held one Michelin star in 2021 and 2022 and remains in the current New York guide without a star.
