Smith & Wollensky is the 1977 original on the corner of Third Avenue and 49th Street, its name picked at random from a New York City phone book. It is an old-guard New York steakhouse with a power-lunch crowd at midday and a big, animated dining room at night, the room for a business dinner, a father-son night, or a serious steak before the rest of the night starts.
The service is part of the tradition. Many of the servers are longtime professionals, and their jackets show it: a star on the pocket marks five years, a slash on the sleeve marks each year. Upstairs, the skylit second floor holds private dining rooms that can be used on their own or combined for a larger party. Next door, Wollensky's Grill is the casual spin-off, open daily until 1:00 AM for steaks and burgers.
The kitchen is built on USDA Prime beef, dry-aged for about four weeks and hand-butchered in-house. The bone-in rib steak and the NY cut sirloin lead the menu, the filet mignon comes with au poivre, Cajun or Roquefort, and the porterhouse is cut for two. Live Maine lobster and the raw bar bouquets, Smith's for two or Wollensky's Grand for four, work for the table. Round it out with creamed spinach, hash browns and an old-fashioned wedge, and close on one of the housemade cakes.
Reservations are taken on OpenTable or by phone, and parties of 12 or more book directly with the restaurant. Lunch runs Monday through Friday from 11:45 AM to 2:00 PM, and dinner is served nightly from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
