The Eighty Six sits at 86 Bedford Street in the West Village, in the room that was Chumley's, the Prohibition speakeasy. The address is also where the kitchen term "86" is said to have come from, which is a good indication of how much history is in the walls before you order anything.
It is a small steakhouse rather than a grand one. Art Deco detailing, low light, layered wood and leather, and a bar that has been there a century. Michael Vignola runs the kitchen and the sourcing is the point: beef and game come from small independent ranches and are butchered and dry-aged in-house, in a room directly below that bar.
The cocktails are built from scratch in the steakhouse canon rather than reinvented, and the wine list runs deep into rare and collectible bottles.
