The Eighty Six sits at 86 Bedford Street in the West Village, in the room that was Chumley's, the Prohibition-era speakeasy. The address is also where the kitchen term "86" is said to have come from, which is a good indication of how much history is in the walls before you order anything.
It is a small steakhouse, just ten tables, with Art Deco detailing, warm layered textures, and a bar that has been there a century. Michael Vignola runs the kitchen and the sourcing is the point: beef and game come from small independent ranches and are butchered and aged in-house, in a room directly below that bar. The 30-day dry-aged Delmonico and the porterhouse for two with marrow bones show the approach.
The cocktails are classic steakhouse drinks built entirely from scratch, the Olive Oil Old Fashioned and a Bread and Butter martini among them, and the wine list is curated around rare and collectible bottles chosen to go with the steaks.
Open nightly from 4pm to 10pm. Parties are capped at four and the dress code is smart elegant. Walk-ins are seated only when cancellations and no-shows free up a table, so arriving promptly at opening is the realistic way in without a booking.
