Genuine Bangkok institution, founded in 1957 as Sorndaeng and renamed in 1993
Methavalai Sorndaeng is a genuine Bangkok institution, founded in 1957 as Sorndaeng and given its current name after a 1993 renovation. It sits on Ratchadamnoen Avenue on the south side of Democracy Monument, in the Old Town, and has spent nearly seven decades preserving a style of old-Bangkok Thai cooking that has all but vanished elsewhere.
Step inside and the dining room feels frozen in the mid-twentieth century: crisp white tablecloths, bronze cutlery, cordial glasses set on doilies, courteous servers in starched white coats, and a live band playing Thai classical music at lunch and again in the evening. The atmosphere alone is something no new restaurant can manufacture.
The kitchen still pounds its curry pastes from scratch and shapes its fishcakes from fresh featherback fish. The menu reads like a roll-call of the classics - crispy rice noodles in a sweet-and-sour glaze, red curry with crabmeat and acacia, spicy pomelo salad, and bracing hot-and-sour soups - all cooked with a fidelity to the old recipes that is increasingly rare.
It held a Michelin star from 2019 to 2023 and Michelin Selected status through 2025, though it is not listed in the 2026 Michelin Guide Thailand selection. For a nostalgic, heritage Thai dinner wrapped in genuine period atmosphere, few tables in the city come close. Book ahead and settle in for a slow, old-fashioned evening.
