Yao occupies the 32nd and 33rd floors of the Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse, above the Charoenkrung riverside, and bills itself as a vintage Shanghai-themed rooftop. The look is Shanghai deco - lacquered detail and old-world glamour - a distinctive counterpoint to the glass-box sky bars elsewhere in town.
The 32nd floor is given over to sit-down dining, with five private dining rooms overlooking Bangkok's historic old town on one side and the modern high-rises of Silom and Sathorn on the other. The 33rd-floor open-air rooftop bar sits above it, where the view opens up across the Chao Phraya River and the skyline beyond.
The kitchen leans Cantonese and Shanghainese, with dim sum standards like xiao long bao and shrimp wonton in Szechuan mala sauce alongside heartier plates such as pork ribs in black bean sauce, paired with a Chinese-inflected list of cocktails and mocktails. It is as much a dinner destination as a bar.
The mood is polished and quietly romantic, best caught at golden hour as the river lights come up. Yao runs daily from 5pm to 1am; arrive before sunset for the terrace, and book ahead for a river-facing table on the upper deck.
