Wonderfruit: the Bangkok nights either side
Wonderfruit runs in Chonburi province, on a field near Pattaya, about two hours southeast
of Bangkok by road. It is not a conventional music festival. It runs across four days in
December, it is built around art installations, architecture made from bamboo and
reclaimed timber, farm-to-table kitchens and wellness programming, and the music is one
part of a much wider thing.

Like EDC Thailand, the trip runs through Bangkok on both ends. Long-haul routes land at
Suvarnabhumi, the drive south is manageable, and almost nobody flies in and out without
Bangkok nights on either side.
Why the Bangkok half deserves a plan
Wonderfruit is a camping festival on a field. Four days of that, whatever the production
values, leaves you wanting a proper bed, a proper shower and one very good dinner.
The shape that works is two Bangkok nights on the way in, the festival, and one or two on
the way out. The nights before and after do different jobs, and it is worth booking them
differently.
The nights before are for the view and the scene: rooftops, a late club, the version of
Bangkok that is about height and noise.
The night after is for the meal. Bangkok holds one of the largest Michelin selections in
Asia, and after four days of festival food that is the correct use of an evening.
The rooftops, on the way in
This is the category Bangkok wins outright and the right first night.
Tichuca in Thonglor is the one to
lead with. The tree-canopy structure at the top is unlike anything else in the city, and
the crowd is close to the Wonderfruit demographic.
Sky Bar at lebua is the famous one, sixty-three
floors up on an open parapet, worth doing once.
Sky Beach is the louder alternative and
Above Eleven in Nana is the one that does
not need a plan.
For the river rather than the towers,
Above Riva looks at Wat Arun at twilight, and
Yao is the quieter version.

Late, before you go south
Bangkok clubs run properly late, which is useful when you are adjusting to the time zone
from the wrong direction.
Sing Sing Theater is the most singular
room in the city, a Shanghai-deco fantasy in Thonglor, and the closest thing Bangkok has
to the Wonderfruit design sensibility.
VOID Club is the techno room and the one an
actual festival crowd gravitates to.
Atlas Superclub and
Onyx are the big-production rooms on RCA, and
Sugar Club runs latest of any of them.
The dinner on the way out
This is the booking to make first, because it is the one that needs the most notice and it
is the one you will remember.
Sorn is the southern Thai tasting menu that holds
three Michelin stars, and it is the hardest reservation in Thailand. Weeks, not days.
Gaggan is the other one people fly for, and
Potong in Chinatown works out of a
century-old family building.
Le Du and Gaa
are the pair that put modern Thai cooking on the world lists.
For something less structured after four days of festival,
Issaya Siamese Club is a heritage
villa with a garden, and R-Haan is the grand
room for classical Thai.

Practical notes on the gateway
The drive from Bangkok to the festival site is roughly two hours without traffic and
considerably more with it. Leaving the city on a Thursday afternoon is the worst version
of that journey.
Bangkok hotel rates are at their annual peak in December, which is high season
independently of the festival. Book accommodation before you book anything else.
Keep the return night flexible. Festivals end when they end, the drive back is long, and a
three-star tasting menu booked for the evening you get back is a gamble. The night after
that is the safer slot.
