Pan-Asian dining beneath a 20-foot Quan Yin inside a landmarked 1892 building in River North
Tao sits inside a landmarked 1892 building in River North, and dinner begins with a descent. A 40-foot grand staircase leads down into the dining room, with round banquettes and Chinese daybed-influenced sofas built into the steps. The Ink Bar and Emperor's Lounge sit at the top of the stairs, and two Skybox dining rooms look down from the upper level.
The main dining room is anchored by a 20-foot Quan Yin statue with 24 hands, set above a koi pond and animated with 3D projection mapping, inside a Rockwell Group design of velvets, silks and centuries-old woods and stones. TAO Nightclub is a separate space on the second floor, where a retractable disco ball hangs inside a 10-foot Japanese bell.
The Pan-Asian menu is built for sharing: spicy tuna tartare on crispy rice at $26, satay of Chilean sea bass with miso glaze at $28, Peking duck for two at $94, dim sum, sushi and a wagyu rib-eye teppanyaki. Every Sunday, Endless Sundays runs at $65 per person, with dim sum, omelet and carving stations, a sushi and raw bar and a dessert bar.
The restaurant is closed Monday, open Tuesday through Thursday 5 to 10 PM and Friday and Saturday 5 to 11 PM, and on Sunday serves brunch from 10:30 AM to 4 PM, then dinner until 10 PM. Dress is smart, casual-elegant: no shorts, baseball caps, athletic apparel, tank tops or flip flops.
