TAO Los Angeles occupies a two-level space on Selma Avenue in Hollywood, and the room is the reason to come as much as the food. A grand staircase connects the ground floor to the lower level seating, and a 16-foot Quan Yin statue anchors the main dining room, which turns the stairs into a place to see and be seen.
It works as a restaurant that doubles as a night out. The lounge is built around a large bar, and two private dining rooms give groups their own corner of it. Dinner runs until 11pm Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
The menu, developed by Chef Ralph Scamardella, draws on Chinese, Japanese and Thai ingredients and is built for sharing: the sushi and sashimi list, the tuna pringles with truffle aioli, miso roasted black cod, chicken and Chilean sea bass satays and a long list of specialty rolls meant for the middle of the table. Tables of four or more can order the family-style set menus, served to the whole table.
Sundays are given over to an endless brunch from 11am to 2:30pm. The house suggests cocktail or business casual attire, and shorts are not permitted. Reservations open up to 60 days in advance.
