TAO Los Angeles occupies a two-level space on Selma Avenue in Hollywood, and the room is the reason to come as much as the food. A staircase runs down the middle of it under rows of red lanterns, with banquette seating banked on either side, and a reclining Buddha stretches the length of the wall above the lounge.
It works as a restaurant that behaves like a night out rather than a dinner that ends. The bar is large and busy, the volume climbs as the evening goes, and two private dining rooms sit off the main floor for groups who want their own corner of it.
The kitchen is pan-Asian and built for sharing - the sushi and sashimi programme, the tuna pringle that the group is known for, miso-roasted black cod, satays and a long list of rolls designed to land in the middle of the table rather than in front of one person.
