Benares holds a Michelin star for modern Indian cooking from a room at 12A Berkeley Square, in Mayfair - warm woods, soft metallic accents and low ambient light giving it the feel of a luxurious Indian salon tempered by British restraint. Chef Sameer Taneja runs the kitchen; he rejoined Benares in 2019 and led the restaurant back to a Michelin star in 2021, which it has held every year since.
The food is modern Indian built on seasonal British ingredients and precise technique, moving from tandoori dishes and regional curries to a tasting menu that changes with the seasons. Desserts rework Indian classics with a contemporary touch.
Beyond the main room, four private dining rooms handle groups: the Berkeley Room seats up to 16, the Sommelier's Room up to 10, the Chef's Table up to 8 with a view of the kitchen, and the largest, the Dover Room, up to 36. The adjacent bar runs an encyclopedic wine list alongside a full cocktail program.
