Avra Madison · Restaurant · New York

Charcoal-grilled whole fish off the counter, in the old Copacabana room by Central Park.
Avra Madison fills a bi-level room on East 60th Street, a few steps from the south-east corner of Central Park, in the space the restaurant says once held the Copacabana. Glass, greenery and pale stone run through both floors, and the fish counter sits at the center of it rather than out of sight.
The cooking is deliberately plain. Whole fish from both Mediterranean and American waters is chosen at the counter and priced by the pound, then charcoal grilled and dressed with olive oil, lemon and oregano. Around it sit the spreads, grilled octopus and vegetables, and a wine list that leans on the Greek islands, with Cycladic whites doing most of the work alongside the fish.
It runs all day rather than dinner only, from 11:30 AM to 11 PM Sunday through Tuesday and to midnight Wednesday through Saturday, which makes it as much an Upper East Side lunch room as an evening booking.
Tables are released thirty days ahead and go quickly at peak times. The bar is held back for walk-ins on a first come, first served basis, and is the better route on a night when nothing is showing online.
