French-Mediterranean dinner under a soaring sculpted ceiling at Moxy East Village
Cathedrale earns its name: a soaring dining room in the Moxy East Village hotel, built for a dressed-up dinner where the arrival matters as much as the food.
Rockwell Group designed the main room around a 26-foot, triple-height ceiling covered by Fillmore, a massive wire mesh sculpture by Edoardo Tresoldi that nods to the Fillmore East, once known as the Church of Rock 'n' Roll. An open-hearth kitchen with copper accents is in full view, the angular bar sits under vintage-style neon signs, and out back the Patio has a retractable glass roof and foliage spilling from rebar planters. The Poster Room, hung with Fillmore East posters, hosts private dinners for up to 32.
Chef Jason Hall cooks French-Mediterranean food rooted in the coastal cuisine of Southern France, with notes from Italy, Spain, and Greece. The rotisserie chicken a la moutarde comes off the open hearth, and the Maine lobster rigatoni is tossed with squid ink and cherry tomatoes. Start with warm dates with Marcona almonds and Roquefort or the potato chip omelette with caviar. The bar runs an oysters and Champagne happy hour Sunday through Friday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, walk-ins welcome.
Dinner runs nightly from 5:00 PM, to 11:00 PM Sunday through Thursday and to midnight Friday and Saturday. Reservations run through OpenTable, and the restaurant suggests booking up to 45 days ahead. Online reservations accommodate up to eight guests, while parties of nine or ten are handled directly by the reservations team.
