British steakhouse serving dry-aged beef and a Sunday Roast in Gramercy's historic Assembly Hall
Hawksmoor built its London name on dry-aged steaks cooked over live charcoal, and brought that standard to Gramercy. In New York the beef is all-natural and comes from family-run farms, many of them in upstate New York, Pennsylvania and New England. The restaurant fills the restored Assembly Hall of the landmarked United Charities Building at 109 East 22nd Street, steps from Gramercy Park.
The main dining room is the draw: a soaring vaulted ceiling, original crown molding, and green leather banquettes under antique lighting, restored with reclaimed materials by Macaulay Sinclair. It is a grand space that never feels stiff, suited to a business dinner or a group celebration.
At heart this is a live-fire charcoal steakhouse, with the beef seasoned simply with flaked sea salt before it hits the grill. The Sunday Roast is a genuine reason to plan around a Sunday: dry-aged rump cooked over charcoal and finished low and slow, with beef-dripping roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, roasted carrots, buttered greens, and bone marrow and onion gravy, plus cauliflower cheese on the side. Round it out with the seafood, the sides, and the award-winning cocktail program.
The dining room serves Monday to Wednesday from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM, Thursday to Saturday from 12:00 PM to 12:00 AM, and Sunday from 11:45 AM to 10:30 PM. The Sunday Roast runs from 11:45 AM to 4:30 PM. The main dining room takes parties of up to eight; groups of nine or more book a private dining room.
