The fair is at Javits, on the far West Side. The openings are in Chelsea and Tribeca. Book downtown rather than central, and keep the tasting menus off the fair days.
New York Art Week: the Armory Show and the tables around it
The Armory Show anchors New York's autumn art week at the Javits Center on the far West
Side, and it does not run alone. Independent 20th Century, the Future Fair and a long
satellite programme of gallery openings across Chelsea, Tribeca and the Lower East Side
run in the same days, and the Whitney, the Guggenheim and the New Museum time their
openings to the same week.
Confirm the 2026 dates at thearmoryshow.com. It sits in early September most years,
running Thursday to Sunday with a Wednesday preview.
The fair is at Javits. Almost nothing else is.
The geography problem
This is the thing to plan around, and most people do not.
Javits is on Eleventh Avenue in the mid-30s, which is a long way west of everywhere you
want to eat. The gallery openings are in Chelsea, twenty blocks south, and in Tribeca and
the Lower East Side, which is a different journey again. The museum events are uptown.
A day that starts at the fair, moves to a Chelsea opening at six and needs a table at
half past eight is three separate crosstown journeys, and the one that breaks is always
the dinner.
The fix is to book west and south rather than convenient-sounding and central. A table in
the West Village or Tribeca is a ten-minute ride from a Chelsea opening. A table in
Midtown East is not.
The rooms the art week actually uses
Carbone on Thompson Street is the default and
behaves like it. It is the hardest straight reservation downtown in any week, and art week
is not an easy one. Four weeks out.
Torrisi in Nolita is the Major Food Group room that is
slightly easier to land and arguably the better dinner.
Cipriani Downtown on West Broadway is the
one the international gallery crowd defaults to, and it runs late and loud.
Tatiana at Lincoln Center is uptown, which puts it near
the museum programming rather than the galleries, and it is the most talked-about room in
the city.
For a group that has been standing in a convention centre all day,
Hawksmoor near Gramercy is the straightforward
answer, and Nobu Downtown takes a table of ten
without difficulty.
The tasting menus, for the day before
Art week is a bad week for a three-hour tasting menu, because the schedule will not hold
still. Book these for the Wednesday or the Monday either side.
Eleven Madison Park and
Per Se are the two three-star rooms, and both need weeks
of notice regardless of what else is happening in the city.
Daniel is the uptown classic,
Jungsik is the Tribeca Korean one, and
Sushi Nakazawa is the West Village omakase
counter.

Rooftops, for the gap between the fair and dinner
The fair closes at seven, the openings start at six, and there is usually an hour that
needs somewhere to put it.
The Skylark on West 39th is the closest good
rooftop to Javits and the obvious answer.
Magic Hour and
Bar 54 are the Times Square-adjacent options, which is
a compromise but a short one.
Further downtown and better placed for the Chelsea openings,
The Fleur Room sits above the Moxy Chelsea, and
Overstory in the Financial District is the
cocktail-led one worth the trip on a quieter night.

Late
Openings finish early and the night has somewhere to go.
TAO Downtown in Chelsea is the closest
large room to the gallery district.
Somewhere Nowhere is the rooftop-and-pool
option on West 30th, close to Javits, and
Marquee on Tenth Avenue is the Chelsea mainstay.
How to plan the week
Book downtown, not midtown. The dinner needs to be near the openings, not near the fair.
Keep the tasting menus off the fair days. Wednesday preview night and the Monday after are
the two slots that hold.
Book the Thursday. The Armory's first public day is the busiest night of the week for
restaurants downtown, ahead of Friday and Saturday, because the trade is in town and
leaves before the weekend.
