Mario Carbone's original Italian-American restaurant on Thompson Street in Greenwich Village
Carbone opened in 2013 on historic Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, the original location from chef Mario Carbone, where reservations remain scarce. Chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi set out to build an Italian-American restaurant for the modern era, glamorous and fun, in the former home of the red sauce restaurant Rocco, and the Carbone name now glows in neon over the original Rocco sign.
The room evokes a New York restaurant of the 1950s or 1960s: burgundy leather banquettes, gold accents, polished wood, marble, and soft art deco lighting, with retro Italian movie posters, framed photos, and artworks by the likes of Julian Schnabel. Captains in tuxedos by Zac Posen work the floor, many of them there since day one, and the service is charismatic.
The menu draws on the culinary history of Little Italy. Start with assorted baked clams and the Caesar alla ZZ, move on to spicy rigatoni vodka and Mario's meatballs, then the veal parmesan, and finish with tiramisu cake. The bar pours classics like the Manhattan alongside a full wine list. Carbone is listed in the MICHELIN Guide without a star.
Lunch is served Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM, and dinner runs nightly from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM. Guests are asked to dress for the occasion, anyone not well presented may be refused entry, and shorts, open-toed shoes, and tank tops are not allowed.
