Il Mulino has anchored the same Greenwich Village address at 86 West 3rd Street since 1981, and more than four decades on it is still the original room. Brothers Fernando and Gino Masci, chefs from Abruzzo, opened it to cook the food of their home region, and the kitchen still describes its cooking as authentic preparations from Abruzzo.
The room is one small dining room with exposed brick walls and seats set close together, and the feel is old-school New York. Alongside the set menu, waiters recite a long list of daily specials from memory. The meal starts before you order: complimentary antipasti arrive at the table, from salumi and marinated mussels to hunks of Parmigiano-Reggiano cut from a large wheel.
The cooking stays true to the Italian tradition of farm-fresh meat, fish and vegetables, with handmade pastas and plates that draw on both land and sea. The wine list is a deep collection of Italian regional bottles, and the bar is a good place to start with an aperitivo. For private events and full buyouts, the dining room holds up to 80 guests, with menus built with the executive chef.
Dinner runs Monday through Friday from 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM, Saturday from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Reservations run through Resy.
