Il Mulino New York · Restaurant · New York
The 1981 Greenwich Village Italian institution - Abruzzese abundance and tableside theater.
Il Mulino has anchored the same Greenwich Village address at 86 West 3rd Street since 1981, and for most of that run it held Zagat's crown as Manhattan's number-one Italian. This is the original room: candlelit, brick-walled, and built for a serious, unhurried dinner rather than the scene of the moment.
Brothers Fernando and Gino Masci, both of whom trained cooking aboard passenger ships before landing in New York, opened it to serve the Abruzzese cooking they could not find in the city. More than four decades later the format is unchanged, and that consistency is the point. The room is intimate and low-lit, with white linens, dark leather chairs, exposed brick, and framed black-and-white photography, tables close together and regulars sitting elbow to elbow with first-timers.
