L'Artusi has been a West Village mainstay since December 2008, spread across two floors at 228 West 10th Street. It takes its name from Pellegrino Artusi and his self-published cookbook, and the kitchen serves a modern take on traditional Italian cooking.
The 110-seat room runs banquettes on both floors, an extended traditional bar, a cheese bar, and a chef's counter that looks straight into the open kitchen. A 2,500-bottle walk-in wine cellar doubles as a private dining room, and the mostly Italian wine list is laid out region by region.
Executive chef and partner Joe Vigorito puts pasta at the center of the menu: tagliatelle bolognese bianco, bucatini with pancetta, tomato and chilies, pici cacio e pepe, and spaghetti with garlic, chilies and sourdough breadcrumbs. Beyond the pasta, look at the roasted mushrooms with pancetta and a fried egg, bigoli alle vongole with manila clams, octopus alla piastra with saffron fregola, and day boat scallops with cauliflower. Save room for the olive oil cake.
Lunch is served Monday to Friday 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM, weekend brunch Saturday and Sunday 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM, and dinner Sunday to Thursday 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM and Friday and Saturday 5:00 PM to midnight. Reservations open on Resy on a two-week rolling basis, each day at 9:00 AM, and a selection of bar and counter seats is kept for walk-ins.
