Le Bernardin is Eric Ripert's Midtown seafood restaurant at 155 West 51st Street, and it has held three Michelin stars every year since the Guide arrived in New York in 2005. Maguy and Gilbert Le Coze brought it from Paris in 1986, and Ripert has led the kitchen since the mid-1990s on a simple idea: the fish is the star of the plate.
A September 2011 redesign by Bentel & Bentel reshaped the room, won a James Beard Award for restaurant design, and added the Lounge, a first for the restaurant. The Lounge seats walk-ins only and serves its own menu, including a warm lobster and black truffle bun, alongside the standard prix-fixe and tasting menus.
In the Dining Room, the menu moves from almost raw to barely touched to lightly cooked, with a chef's tasting and a vegetarian tasting alongside. Look for the layers of thinly pounded yellowfin tuna with foie gras, the poached lobster with grilled napa cabbage and red wine sauce bourguignonne, and the bread-crusted striped bass with sauce barigoule. Wine director Aldo Sohm oversees a 15,000-bottle cellar.
Lunch runs Monday to Friday 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM, and dinner Monday to Thursday 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM and Friday to Saturday until 11:00 PM; closed Sunday. Dress is business casual, jackets recommended but not required, and children under ten are not admitted. Reservations open on Resy on the first of each month for the following month.
