The Corner Store takes the landmark corner of Houston and West Broadway in SoHo and runs it as an upscale version of an old New York joint. The nostalgia is deliberate and so is the polish; it is not a diner and it is not trying to be.
The menu splits three ways. There is a raw bar with oysters, a jumbo shrimp cocktail and bluefin tartare. There is comfort cooking played straight, including a five-cheese pizza roll and a Caesar with everything-bagel croutons. And there is a butcher's counter that carries real weight: 30-day dry-aged New York strip and ribeye, a center-cut filet, steak frites, and a wagyu French dip built on 72-hour Westholme ribeye.
It is one of the harder SoHo tables to get. Reservations release about two weeks ahead and clear fast, and walk-ins are only taken when cancellations open space.

It comes from Catch Hospitality Group - Tilman Fertitta with Mark Birnbaum and Eugene Remm - and it took the corner that Dos Caminos held for years. Rockwell Group did the room, and the brief was old-school New York rather than new: a thirteen-seat bar, deep booths and banquettes in warm wood, and an enclosed patio planted heavily enough to read as a garden.
The cooking is American classics played with a straight face and a little mischief - spinach and artichoke, fried olives and peppers, a wagyu pastrami reuben, five-cheese pizza rolls. It is food designed to be recognized before it is admired, which is the whole point of the place.
The bar is martini-forward and serves them from a cart at the table. Between the room, the corner and the drinks program it became one of the hardest tables in the city almost immediately.
