Pacific Beach boardwalk dining at Tower23 with ocean views
JRDN is the bar and restaurant inside Tower23 Hotel at 723 Felspar Street in Pacific Beach, set at the edge of the Pacific beside the boardwalk. The ocean views carry from breakfast through sunset, and as the evening goes on the mood moves from California casual to West Coast hip.
The kitchen calls its cooking Modern Surf + Turf, from raw bar to rare cut. A jewel box sushi bar turns out signature rolls, sashimi and nigiri, including the Roulette Roll with torched salmon, crab, avocado, fried shishito peppers, spicy aioli and eel sauce. The Tower 23 is the shareable centerpiece, built with king crab legs, shrimp, oysters, ceviche, tuna tartare and lobster for six to eight guests. Steamed mussels come with chorizo, Chardonnay, garlic, tomato, fennel, cream and herb butter.
At dinner the surf side runs to a broiled cold water lobster tail, cioppino and crab-stuffed salmon, and the turf side to center-cut filet mignon, an 18-ounce prime ribeye and a 34-ounce tomahawk sliced for sharing. The house-made butter cake is flambeed tableside. Mornings bring breakfast on weekdays and brunch on weekends, including a Lobster Benedict with Maine lobster and classic hollandaise.
Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3 to 5pm, with $1 oysters from 3 to 4pm, and dinner starts at 5pm. The kitchen stays open until 9pm Sunday through Thursday and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights, which leaves time for a long dinner after sunset.
